1. Project Description

Background

1. Maharashtra Agricultural Competitiveness Project (MACP) aims at creating of knowledge base to be used by the farmers along with the dissemination of market information and market intelligence. It is proposed to create new alternative channels for marketing of agriculture produce like formation of Common Service Centres, Rural Haat development, establishing e-trading platforms and linkage with spot exchange. Besides this with the help of additional knowledge, the farmer would sell his agricultural produce in the existing markets as well as in the proposed alternative markets. Therefore the existing markets viz. Agriculture Produce Market Committees (APMCs) are proposed to be modernised for this purpose.
2. The objective of the project are to develop more competitive marketing systems, improve market access for farmers, increase private sector participation in agriculture and allied sectors, improve competitiveness of farmers by capacity building measures, establish and strengthen backward and forward linkages.
3. The project would be implemented with the participation of 3 line departments namely Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Agricultural Marketing. Explanation: For this project Department of Agriculture means “Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, Dairy Development and Fisheries Department”, Animal Husbandry Department means “Animal Husbandry, Dairy Development and Fisheries Department”, and Cooperation & Marketing Department means “Cooperation, Marketing & Textiles Department”. Besides these line departments, various autonomous bodies involved under the project are
a) Maharashtra State Agricultural Marketing Board (MSAMB), working under Cooperation & Marketing Department, Maharashtra State Warehousing Corporation (MSWC) working under Cooperation & Marketing Department, and National Institute of Post Harvest Technology (NIPHT) working under Maharashtra State Agricultural Marketing Board (MSAMB).  
b)  All 33 district ATMAs and  VANAMATI, working under Agriculture Department.
4. Phase wise implementation: The project would be implemented in all the districts of the State in a phased manner as shown below during a period of six years. After the commencement of the project all the  subcomponents will be initiated in the First
